![]() | This New Video Shows You How To Start, Structure, and Manage A Successful Behavioral Support Group For Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. |
Created by Dr. Jonathan Grayson, director of The Anxiety and Agoraphobia Treatment Center in Bala Cynwyd, Pa., and medical adviser to the Philadelphia Affiliate of the OC Foundation, and funded in part by educational grants from Eli Lilly and Company, Pfizer Inc., GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals, Solvay Pharmaceuticals, and Pharmacia and Upjohn Company, the 22-minute video and 36-page start-up manual is a "must" for anyone committed to forming a meaningful support group.
The video is modeled after the G.O.A.L. support group, and it features "real" life-experience benefits gained by members of the Philadelphia Affiliate of the OC Foundation.
The G.O.A.L. group is divided into three distinct parts: (1) discussion of a previously agreed-upon OCD-related topic, (2) participation in small groups to devise behavioral goals, and (3) informal socializing.
G.O.A.L. groups are facilitated by individuals with OCD. Ideally, a mental-health professional, who donates his or her time, is present to help with group progress and to answer questions during the socializing period. Dr. Jonathan Grayson remarks, "G.O.A.L. is a way for self-help groups to turn their hope and support for one another into action."
